About NEO

NEO is a blockchain platform from China designed to support smart contracts and digital identity, often described as an early competitor to Ethereum with a focus on regulatory-friendly design. Its token is NEO.
NEO was founded by Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang, launching in China in 2014 originally as AntShares before rebranding to NEO in 2017. It was one of the first smart contract platforms to emerge from Asia and was often referred to in its early years as China's Ethereum.
NEO uses a delegated Byzantine fault tolerant consensus, where a set of elected bookkeeping nodes validate transactions, aiming for fast finality suited to enterprise use. Uniquely, NEO supports smart contracts written in mainstream languages like C# and Java, rather than requiring developers to learn a blockchain-specific language.
Holding NEO generates GAS, a separate token used to pay for transactions and computation on the network, similar in concept to VeChain's two-token model. NEO also carries voting rights, letting holders participate in electing the network's consensus nodes and shaping protocol governance.
