Overview
About Cardano
Cardano is a blockchain platform built on peer-reviewed academic research, aiming for a highly secure and sustainable foundation for smart contracts and decentralized apps. Its native coin is ADA.
Cardano was founded by Charles Hoskinson, one of Ethereum's original co-founders, who left to build a blockchain grounded in academic research. Development began in 2015 through the engineering company IOHK, now Input Output Global, alongside the Cardano Foundation and EMURGO, and the network launched in September 2017. Its major upgrades are named after historical figures, from Byron to Voltaire.
Cardano runs on Ouroboros, a proof-of-stake protocol notable for being developed through peer-reviewed academic papers before implementation. ADA holders can delegate their coins to stake pools that validate transactions, earning rewards without giving up custody of their funds. The chain separates its settlement layer from its computation layer and added smart contract support in 2021 through the Alonzo upgrade.
ADA pays transaction fees on Cardano, is staked to secure the network, and gives holders voting power in the project's on-chain governance system, which lets the community direct treasury funds and protocol changes. The ecosystem includes DeFi applications, native tokens, and identity projects, with a notable focus on real-world deployments in Africa.
