About Sui
Sui is a Layer 1 blockchain built with the Move programming language, designed for fast transaction processing and easy development of apps like games, marketplaces, and DeFi tools. Its native token, SUI, pays for network fees and staking.
Sui was built by Mysten Labs, founded in 2021 by former senior engineers from Meta's Diem blockchain project, including CEO Evan Cheng. The team took the Move programming language developed at Meta and built a new high-performance blockchain around it, launching the Sui mainnet in May 2023.
Sui treats everything on-chain as an object with clear ownership, which lets the network process unrelated transactions in parallel instead of one strict global sequence. Simple transfers can skip full consensus entirely and finalize almost instantly, while its use of the Move language provides strong safety guarantees against common smart contract bugs.
SUI pays gas fees, is staked with validators to secure the network, and anchors a growing ecosystem of DeFi, gaming, and NFT applications that take advantage of the chain's speed. Part of every transaction fee is offset by a storage fund mechanism designed to pay for the long-term cost of keeping data on-chain.
