Overview
About Ethereum
Ethereum is a programmable blockchain that introduced smart contracts, allowing developers to build decentralized applications directly on top of it. Its native coin, ETH, is used to pay transaction fees and secure the network.
Ethereum was proposed in late 2013 by Vitalik Buterin, a programmer who wanted a blockchain that could run programs, not just record payments. He was joined by co-founders including Gavin Wood, who wrote the technical specification, and Joseph Lubin, who later founded ConsenSys. The network went live in July 2015 after a public crowdsale the previous year, and it has since become the foundation of most decentralized finance and NFT activity.
Ethereum is a programmable blockchain: developers deploy small programs called smart contracts that run exactly as written, without a company operating them. Since a major 2022 upgrade known as the Merge, the network is secured by proof of stake, where participants lock up ETH as collateral to validate transactions instead of using energy-intensive mining. Every transaction pays a fee in ETH, part of which is permanently destroyed, linking the coin's supply to network usage.
ETH is the fuel of the Ethereum network: every transaction, token transfer, and smart contract interaction requires it for fees. It is also used as collateral across decentralized finance, staked by validators to secure the network in exchange for rewards, and held as an investment in its own right. Because thousands of tokens and applications are built on Ethereum, demand for ETH is tied to the activity of the broader ecosystem running on top of it.
