About Cosmos

Cosmos Hub is the central chain of the Cosmos network, a set of independently built blockchains that can communicate and transfer assets between each other. Its token, ATOM, is used for staking and securing the network.
Cosmos was founded by Jae Kwon, who invented the Tendermint consensus algorithm, later joined by Ethan Buchman. Launched in 2019 after a 2017 fundraise, it pioneered the vision of an internet of blockchains, sovereign chains that communicate rather than compete for space on one network.
The Cosmos SDK lets developers build application-specific blockchains quickly, all secured by Tendermint-style proof of stake. These chains connect through IBC, the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, which moves assets and messages between them without centralized bridges. Dozens of major networks were built with this stack, making Cosmos technology among the most widely deployed in crypto.
ATOM secures the Cosmos Hub through staking and governs the Hub's decisions. Interchain security lets newer chains lease security from ATOM's validator set, giving the token a role beyond its own chain, though the value relationship between the Hub and the wider Cosmos ecosystem remains an ongoing community debate.
