Overview
About Avalanche
Avalanche is a blockchain platform built for speed and the ability to launch custom, interoperable blockchains called subnets. Its native coin, AVAX, is used for transaction fees, staking, and governance across the network.
Avalanche was created by Ava Labs, founded by Cornell computer science professor Emin Gün Sirer with Kevin Sekniqi and Maofan Yin. The team developed a novel consensus protocol first described in a pseudonymous 2018 paper, and launched the Avalanche mainnet in September 2020 after one of the fastest-selling token sales of that year.
Avalanche uses a consensus mechanism where validators repeatedly sample small random groups of other validators until the network rapidly converges on agreement, allowing transactions to finalize in under two seconds. The platform is built from multiple chains with distinct roles, and its subnet architecture lets anyone launch a custom blockchain with its own rules that still benefits from Avalanche's validator ecosystem.
AVAX pays transaction fees across the Avalanche network, with all fees permanently burned, and is staked by validators and delegators to secure the chain. It also serves as the base currency of Avalanche's DeFi ecosystem and is required to launch subnets, tying the token to institutional and gaming projects that build their own chains on the platform.
