About Solana
Solana is a high-speed blockchain built for handling large volumes of transactions at low cost, making it popular for decentralized apps, trading platforms, and NFT projects. Its native coin, SOL, is used for fees and network security.
Solana was founded by Anatoly Yakovenko, a former Qualcomm engineer, who published its whitepaper in 2017 and launched the network in March 2020 together with Raj Gokal and the team at Solana Labs. Yakovenko's key insight was a cryptographic clock called proof of history, which lets the network order transactions without waiting for global agreement on timing.
Solana combines proof of stake with proof of history, a mechanism that timestamps transactions before they are processed, allowing validators to work through them in parallel at very high speed. The result is a chain capable of thousands of transactions per second with fees that typically cost a fraction of a cent, though this design demands powerful validator hardware.
SOL pays transaction fees on the Solana network and is staked by holders to help secure the chain and earn rewards. Solana has become a leading home for high-activity applications, including decentralized exchanges, NFT marketplaces, and meme coin trading, all of which generate constant demand for SOL as the network's base currency.
