About XTZ
Tezos is a blockchain platform designed to formally upgrade itself through on-chain voting, letting the protocol evolve without requiring contentious splits. Its token, XTZ, is used for staking and governance.
Tezos was designed by Arthur Breitman and Kathleen Breitman, who published its whitepaper in 2014 under the pseudonym L.M. Goodman before revealing themselves. The project raised 232 million dollars in a 2017 token sale, one of the largest of that era, and launched its mainnet in 2018 after a period of internal governance disputes.
Tezos was built around on-chain self-amendment: the protocol itself can be upgraded through on-chain voting by token holders, without requiring contentious hard forks that split a community, a direct response to the governance conflicts seen on other blockchains. It uses a proof-of-stake system called Liquid Proof of Stake.
XTZ is staked, or baked in Tezos terminology, to participate in consensus and governance voting, earning rewards for securing the network. Tezos has found particular adoption in digital art and NFTs due to its low energy use, and in institutional pilots for tokenized securities in Europe.
