About NEAR Protocol
NEAR Protocol is a developer-friendly blockchain designed to scale easily while keeping the experience of building apps simple, similar to traditional web development. Its token, NEAR, covers fees and staking rewards.
NEAR Protocol was founded in 2018 by Alexander Skidanov, a former Microsoft and MemSQL engineer, and Illia Polosukhin, a co-author of the landmark AI research paper that introduced the transformer architecture behind modern AI models. The network launched in 2020 with a mission of making blockchain usable for ordinary developers and users.
NEAR is a proof-of-stake chain using a sharding design called Nightshade, which splits the network into parallel segments to scale capacity as demand grows. It emphasizes usability: human-readable account names instead of long addresses, low predictable fees, and account abstraction features that let applications hide blockchain complexity entirely.
NEAR pays transaction fees and is staked to secure the network, while the ecosystem has increasingly positioned itself at the intersection of blockchain and artificial intelligence, driven by Polosukhin's AI background. Its chain abstraction tools also let users interact with multiple blockchains through a single NEAR account.
