About Filecoin

Filecoin is a decentralized storage network where users pay to store data across a global network of independent hard drive operators, as an alternative to centralized cloud storage. Its token is FIL.
Filecoin was created by Juan Benet, who also created the InterPlanetary File System, or IPFS, a protocol for decentralized data storage. Filecoin, developed by Protocol Labs, launched its mainnet in 2020 after raising over 200 million dollars in one of the largest token sales of its time, adding an economic incentive layer on top of IPFS.
Filecoin is a decentralized storage marketplace where anyone with spare hard drive space can become a storage provider, committing capacity and earning FIL in return. The network uses cryptographic proofs to continuously verify that providers are actually storing the data they claim to, without needing to trust them.
FIL is paid by clients to store and retrieve data, earned by storage providers, and used as collateral that providers must stake to participate, which they forfeit if they fail to prove they are holding data correctly. This creates real economic accountability behind the network's decentralized storage claims.
