About ZRO
LayerZero is a messaging protocol that lets different blockchains send information and assets to each other directly, without needing a centralized bridge. Its token, ZRO, is used for fees and governance.
LayerZero was founded by Bryan Pellegrino and Ryan Zarick, launching in 2021 with the goal of making blockchains communicate as easily as sending a message. It raised funding from major venture firms and became one of the most widely integrated interoperability protocols in crypto.
LayerZero uses an architecture where independent parties, an oracle and a relayer, each independently verify a cross-chain message, and the message is only accepted if both agree, without requiring a slow, generalized bridge to hold funds in escrow. This lets applications send tokens and data between dozens of different blockchains.
ZRO is the governance and utility token of the LayerZero protocol, distributed through one of the largest airdrops in crypto history in 2024 based on actual usage of the network. It is intended to play a role in securing and governing the protocol as its decentralization roadmap progresses.
