About Aave

Aave is one of the largest decentralized lending protocols, letting users deposit crypto to earn interest or borrow against their holdings without a bank. Its token, AAVE, is used for governance and protocol security.
Aave began as ETHLend, founded in 2017 by Finnish law student Stani Kulechov, and relaunched under its current name, Finnish for ghost, in 2020. It grew into the largest decentralized lending protocol, and its governance community now also oversees the GHO stablecoin and deployments across many networks.
Aave pools deposits from lenders and lets borrowers draw against their own crypto collateral, with interest rates set algorithmically by supply and demand in each market. Positions that fall below required collateral ratios are liquidated automatically, protecting depositors. The protocol pioneered features like flash loans, uncollateralized loans that must be repaid within a single transaction.
AAVE governs the protocol, with holders voting on new markets, risk parameters, and treasury decisions. It can also be staked in the protocol's Safety Module as a backstop against shortfall events, earning rewards for underwriting the system's risk. Aave's scale makes it core infrastructure for the entire DeFi economy.
