PancakeSwap is a leading decentralized exchange built on BNB Chain, letting users swap tokens, provide liquidity, and participate in yield farming. Its token, CAKE, is used for governance and platform rewards.
PancakeSwap launched in September 2020 on BNB Chain, created by an anonymous team, and quickly became the leading decentralized exchange on that network by offering lower fees than Ethereum-based alternatives during a period of high gas costs.
PancakeSwap uses an automated market maker model similar to Uniswap, where liquidity providers deposit token pairs into pools and traders swap against them, paying a fee split between providers and the protocol. It has expanded across multiple chains and added features including a lottery, NFT marketplace, and prediction markets around its trading core.
CAKE is used for governance voting, staking for yield, and participating in the platform's various games and features. A portion of trading fees and other revenue streams are used to buy back and burn CAKE, and the project has actively managed its tokenomics over the years to control inflation from its early high-emission design.
