About Stacks

Stacks is a network that brings smart contracts and decentralized apps to Bitcoin by anchoring its security to the Bitcoin blockchain. Its token, STX, is used for transaction fees and a unique mining process tied to Bitcoin.
Stacks was founded by Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea, who set out to bring smart contracts to Bitcoin, a chain that was never designed to support them. The project, originally called Blockstack, conducted one of the first SEC-qualified token offerings in the United States in 2019.
Stacks is a separate blockchain that settles its transaction history to Bitcoin, anchoring its security to Bitcoin's proof-of-work network through a mechanism called proof of transfer. This lets developers write smart contracts and build applications that are ultimately secured by Bitcoin, without needing to modify the Bitcoin protocol itself.
STX pays for transactions and smart contract execution on Stacks, and can be locked through a process called stacking to earn Bitcoin rewards, a distinctive feature that pays yield in BTC rather than the network's own token. Stacks has positioned itself as a leading approach to bringing DeFi and NFTs to the Bitcoin ecosystem.
