Overview

About Arbitrum

Arbitrum is a leading layer-2 network built on top of Ethereum, designed to process transactions faster and cheaper while inheriting Ethereum's security. Its token, ARB, is used for governance over the network.
Arbitrum was developed by Offchain Labs, founded by Princeton researchers Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder, and Harry Kalodner. Felten previously served as a chief technologist at the White House, and the team spent years on the academic research behind Arbitrum before launching its mainnet in 2021.
Arbitrum is an optimistic rollup: it executes transactions off the main Ethereum chain to keep costs low, then posts compressed transaction data back to Ethereum, assuming transactions are valid unless someone submits a fraud proof challenging them within a set window. This inherits Ethereum's security while offering far cheaper and faster transactions.
ARB is the governance token of the Arbitrum DAO, one of the largest DAOs by treasury size, giving holders a vote over protocol upgrades and fund allocation. Arbitrum has become the leading Ethereum layer-2 by activity, hosting a large share of DeFi trading volume that occurs outside Ethereum's base layer.
