About COW
CoW Protocol is a decentralized exchange aggregator that batches trades together to find better prices and protect users from unfavorable transaction ordering. Its token, COW, is used for governance.
CoW Protocol, short for Coincidence of Wants, was developed by the Gnosis team, building on the earlier Gnosis Protocol to create a trading system focused on protecting users from a problem called MEV, where sophisticated actors profit by manipulating transaction ordering at regular traders' expense.
Trades are batched and matched directly against each other when possible, a coincidence of wants, and any remaining orders are filled through external liquidity sources by competing solvers who find the best possible price, with the protocol design specifically structured to prevent front-running and sandwich attacks.
COW is the governance token of the protocol, letting holders vote on how the trading system evolves. CoW Protocol has become known specifically for its MEV-protection focus, appealing to traders who have been burned by worse execution on more exposed trading venues.
