About ZEC

Zcash launched in October 2016, created by cryptographer Zooko Wilcox and a team of scientists building on academic work from Johns Hopkins and other universities. It grew out of the Zerocoin research project and was the first major cryptocurrency to deploy zero-knowledge proofs at scale, backed by the Electric Coin Company and the Zcash Foundation.
Zcash is a proof-of-work blockchain based on Bitcoin's design but with a critical addition: shielded transactions powered by zk-SNARKs, a form of zero-knowledge cryptography. These allow the network to verify that a transaction is valid without revealing the sender, receiver, or amount. Users can choose between transparent addresses, which work like Bitcoin's, and shielded addresses, which are fully private.
ZEC is used for payments where financial privacy matters, offering confidentiality that transparent blockchains cannot. Like Bitcoin it has a fixed cap of 21 million coins and undergoes halvings, giving it a similar scarcity profile. Its optional-privacy design has helped it remain listed on major exchanges where fully anonymous coins have been delisted.
