Overview
About XRP
XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger, a blockchain built for fast, low-cost cross-border payments. It was created with involvement from Ripple, a company that uses the technology for international money transfer services.
XRP was created in 2012 by developers David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb, and Arthur Britto, who built the XRP Ledger and gifted a large portion of the supply to a company now known as Ripple. Ripple, led for most of its history by CEO Brad Garlinghouse, develops payment products that use the ledger, though the XRP Ledger itself operates independently of the company.
The XRP Ledger reaches agreement through a consensus protocol among trusted validators rather than mining, allowing transactions to settle in a few seconds with very low fees. All 100 billion XRP were created at launch, with no ongoing issuance; a large share held by Ripple is locked in escrow and released on a published schedule. A small amount of XRP is destroyed with every transaction as an anti-spam measure.
XRP is designed as a bridge asset for moving value across borders quickly and cheaply, particularly between different currencies. Ripple's payment products use it to provide liquidity for international transfers without pre-funded accounts. Beyond payments, the XRP Ledger supports token issuance and a built-in decentralized exchange, and XRP pays the network's minimal transaction fees.
