Tether Gold (XAUT) is issued by TG Commodities, part of the Tether group, and launched in 2020. Each token represents ownership of one troy ounce of physical gold held in vaults, combining the oldest store of value with blockchain transferability.
The gold backing XAUT consists of specific, serialized London Good Delivery bars, and holders can look up which bar backs their tokens. Tokens can be transferred like any crypto asset, divided into fractions of an ounce, and large holders can redeem them for physical delivery of the underlying gold.
XAUT lets traders hold gold exposure inside crypto markets, hedge against volatility without exiting to banks, and move gold value globally in minutes. It is one of the two dominant gold-backed tokens and is used both as a safe-haven trading asset and as collateral.
