Overview
About USDT
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a steady value of one US dollar, backed by cash and cash-equivalent reserves. It is one of the most widely used tokens for trading and moving value between exchanges.
Tether was launched in 2014, originally under the name Realcoin, by Brock Pierce, Reeve Collins, and Craig Sellars. It is issued by Tether Limited, a company closely affiliated with the Bitfinex exchange. Over the years Tether has faced scrutiny and regulatory settlements over the composition of its reserves, and it now publishes regular attestations describing the assets backing the token.
Each USDT is intended to be redeemable for one US dollar, backed by a reserve of cash, short-term US Treasury bills, and other assets held by the issuer. The token exists on many blockchains, including Ethereum and TRON, so it can move wherever trading activity is. When demand grows, Tether mints new tokens against new reserves; when holders redeem, tokens are removed from circulation.
USDT is the most traded cryptocurrency in the world by volume, serving as the default quote currency on most exchanges. Traders use it to move in and out of volatile positions without touching the banking system, to transfer value between platforms quickly, and as a dollar substitute in countries with unstable currencies. Its deep liquidity makes it the settlement layer of much of the crypto market.
