Overview
About USDC
USD Coin (USDC) is a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar and backed by cash and short-term US government bonds held in reserve. It is issued by Circle and is widely used across exchanges and decentralized finance apps.
USDC was launched in 2018 by Circle, a US-based financial technology company, originally in partnership with the Coinbase exchange through a consortium called Centre. Circle now issues USDC directly and has positioned it as the compliance-focused stablecoin, publishing monthly reserve reports attested by major accounting firms.
Every USDC is backed one-to-one by US dollar reserves held in cash and short-duration US Treasury securities, largely in a dedicated fund managed by BlackRock. Tokens are minted when institutions deposit dollars with Circle and burned when they redeem. USDC exists on many blockchains, and Circle operates an official protocol for moving it natively between chains.
USDC is widely used as a trusted digital dollar for trading, payments, and settlement, and it is the preferred stablecoin across much of decentralized finance because of its transparent backing. Businesses use it for cross-border payments and treasury operations, while traders rely on it as a stable unit of account that can be redeemed directly for bank dollars.
