Bittensor is a decentralized network that rewards participants for contributing useful machine learning models and computing power, aiming to build an open marketplace for artificial intelligence. Its token is TAO.
Bittensor was founded by AI researchers Jacob Steeves and Ala Shaabana, launching around 2021 with backing from the Opentensor Foundation. Its ambition is to build a decentralized market for machine intelligence, where AI models compete and are rewarded based on the value they contribute.
The network is organized into subnets, each dedicated to a specific AI task such as text generation, model training, or data scraping. Miners contribute machine learning work, validators score its quality, and TAO rewards flow to the best performers, creating a competitive marketplace where useful intelligence earns income. TAO mirrors Bitcoin's economics with a 21 million cap and halvings.
TAO is the currency of the Bittensor economy: it rewards miners and validators, is staked to participate in consensus, and is required to register new subnets. Through dynamic TAO, holders can also stake into specific subnets, effectively investing in individual corners of the decentralized AI market.
