About Chainlink

Chainlink connects blockchains to real-world data, such as prices, weather, or sports results, through a decentralized oracle network. Its token, LINK, is used to pay node operators who supply this outside data securely.
Chainlink was co-founded by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, who published its whitepaper in 2017 with academic advisor Ari Juels and launched the network on Ethereum in 2019. The project is developed by Chainlink Labs and grew from a simple idea: smart contracts are only as useful as the real-world data they can access.
Chainlink is a decentralized oracle network: independent node operators fetch external data such as asset prices, aggregate it to filter out errors or manipulation, and deliver it on-chain where smart contracts can use it. Nodes are paid in LINK for this work and can be required to stake LINK as collateral, giving them an economic incentive to report honestly. Chainlink also operates CCIP, a protocol for passing messages and value between different blockchains.
LINK is the payment and security token of the Chainlink network: applications pay node operators in LINK for data feeds and services, and operators stake LINK to back the quality of their work. Chainlink's price feeds underpin much of decentralized finance, securing tens of billions of dollars in lending and derivatives protocols, which makes the network one of crypto's most relied-upon pieces of infrastructure.
