Overview
About Internet Computer
Internet Computer aims to extend the public internet so that software and services can run directly on-chain, reducing reliance on traditional cloud providers. Its token, ICP, powers computation and governance.
The Internet Computer was developed by the DFINITY Foundation, founded by Dominic Williams, after years of research and one of the largest fundraises of the 2017 era. The network launched in May 2021 with the sweeping ambition of hosting the entire software stack on-chain.
The Internet Computer runs software in units called canisters, smart contracts that can store data, serve web pages directly to browsers, and even interact with other blockchains natively. Its chain-key cryptography lets the network sign transactions on chains like Bitcoin and Ethereum without bridges, and a reverse-gas model means users do not pay fees, developers pre-fund computation instead.
ICP is converted into computation cycles that power applications, staked in the Network Nervous System to govern the protocol, and used to reward node providers. The ecosystem hosts fully on-chain social networks and AI experiments, though the project remains polarizing, with supporters citing its technical depth and critics pointing to its post-launch price history.
