About ENS
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) lets users register human-readable names, like example.eth, that point to their wallet addresses and other on-chain information, replacing long strings of numbers and letters. Its token, ENS, is used for governance.
Ethereum Name Service was created by Nick Johnson, a former Google engineer, launching in 2017 to solve a simple but persistent problem: Ethereum addresses are long strings of random characters that are easy to mistype and impossible to remember.
ENS lets anyone register a human-readable name, like an ending in .eth, and link it to their wallet address, website content, or other information. Sending crypto to someone's ENS name instead of their raw address removes a common source of costly transfer mistakes, and names can also resolve to decentralized websites.
The ENS token governs the protocol through the ENS DAO, with holders voting on treasury use and technical upgrades. Registering and renewing .eth names generates ongoing revenue for the DAO's treasury, and ENS names have become a common piece of on-chain identity, often used as a public username across apps and social platforms.
