About EIGEN
EigenCloud (formerly EigenLayer) lets users re-stake already-staked Ethereum to help secure additional networks and services, earning extra rewards in the process. Its token, EIGEN, is used for governance.
EigenLayer was founded by Sreeram Kannan, a University of Washington professor, launching its protocol in 2023 with one of the most significant fundraises in DeFi history. It introduced a new primitive to Ethereum called restaking.
Restaking lets users who have already staked ETH opt in to also secure additional applications, called actively validated services, by extending the same staked capital to back them, earning additional rewards but also taking on additional risk if those services are compromised. This lets new projects borrow Ethereum's enormous existing security rather than bootstrapping their own from scratch.
EIGEN is a token layered on top of the restaking system, intended to support forms of security that are hard to enforce purely through slashing staked ETH, such as guaranteeing an oracle reported truthful data. Restaking became one of the most significant new categories in crypto following EigenLayer's launch, with numerous protocols building on top of it.
