Overview
About Dogecoin
Dogecoin started in 2013 as a lighthearted, meme-inspired cryptocurrency based on the Shiba Inu dog. Despite its origins as a joke, it has grown into one of the most recognized and actively traded coins, often used for tipping and small payments.
Dogecoin was created in December 2013 by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, who combined the code of an early Bitcoin offshoot with the popular Shiba Inu dog meme as a lighthearted joke about crypto speculation. Both founders left the project years ago, and development is now maintained by a small volunteer team supported by the Dogecoin Foundation.
Dogecoin is a proof-of-work blockchain closely related to Litecoin, and the two are mined together through a system called merged mining, meaning much of Litecoin's mining power also secures Dogecoin. Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin has no supply cap: about five billion new DOGE are issued every year, a design intended to keep it usable as a currency for small payments rather than a scarce store of value.
Dogecoin became one of the most recognized cryptocurrencies through the strength of its community and internet culture, amplified over the years by public endorsements from figures such as Elon Musk. It is used for tipping, small transfers, and payments by a handful of merchants, but its market value is driven primarily by its cultural status as the original meme coin.
