About CRV
Curve DAO is the governance token for Curve Finance, a decentralized exchange optimized for trading stablecoins and similarly priced assets with low slippage. CRV holders vote on protocol parameters.
Curve Finance was founded by Michael Egorov, a physicist and former Nucypher co-founder, launching in January 2020. Curve focused specifically on trading between similarly priced assets, like different stablecoins, a niche that became foundational infrastructure for the rest of DeFi.
Curve uses a specialized automated market maker formula optimized for assets that should trade near the same price, minimizing the slippage and price impact that generic exchange formulas suffer when swapping between stablecoins or wrapped versions of the same asset. Its vote-escrow model lets users lock CRV for up to four years to gain voting power and boosted rewards.
CRV governs the protocol and, when locked as veCRV, directs which liquidity pools receive extra token emissions, a mechanism that sparked the so-called curve wars, where protocols compete to accumulate voting power over Curve's incentives. CRV is also central to Curve's own overcollateralized stablecoin, crvUSD.
