Overview
About COMP
Compound is one of the original decentralized lending protocols, letting users supply crypto to earn interest or borrow against their holdings. Its token, COMP, is used for governance over the protocol.
Compound was founded by Robert Leshner and Geoffrey Hayes, launching in 2018 as one of the first major decentralized lending protocols on Ethereum. Its 2020 launch of the COMP governance token, distributed to users of the protocol, is widely credited with kicking off the DeFi summer boom that followed.
Compound pools deposits from lenders into shared markets for each asset, with interest rates set algorithmically based on how much of the pool is currently borrowed. Borrowers must post crypto collateral worth more than their loan, and positions are automatically liquidated if that collateral value falls too low, protecting the pool's depositors.
COMP governs the Compound protocol, with holders voting on which assets are supported, interest rate models, and risk parameters. As one of the original DeFi blue chips, Compound's governance decisions and total deposits are closely watched as a bellwether for the health of decentralized lending broadly.
