About BNB
BNB is the native token of the BNB Chain ecosystem, originally created by the Binance exchange. It is used to pay trading fees, power transactions on BNB Chain, and participate in token sales and other platform features.
BNB was launched in 2017 by the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, founded by Changpeng Zhao, through an initial coin offering. It began as a simple discount token on the exchange and later became the native coin of Binance's own blockchain, now known as BNB Chain, which supports smart contracts and a large ecosystem of applications.
BNB powers the BNB Chain network, where it pays transaction fees and is staked by validators to secure the chain. Binance also conducts regular burns, permanently destroying a portion of BNB based on activity, with the goal of eventually cutting the total supply in half. This burn mechanism ties the token's supply to the growth of the ecosystem around it.
BNB gives traders discounted fees on the Binance exchange, pays for transactions on BNB Chain, and serves as the entry ticket to token launches on Binance's launchpad. Within the wider BNB Chain ecosystem it is used across decentralized exchanges, games, and DeFi applications, making it one of the most actively used exchange-linked tokens in crypto.
