Overview
About Bitcoin Cash
Bitcoin Cash split from Bitcoin in 2017 with the goal of allowing larger transaction blocks, aiming to keep fees low and support Bitcoin's original use as everyday digital cash.
Bitcoin Cash emerged in August 2017 from a split in the Bitcoin community over how to scale the network. One camp, including early Bitcoin investor Roger Ver and large mining interests, believed transaction capacity should grow through bigger blocks, and when no compromise was reached, the blockchain forked, creating Bitcoin Cash as a separate network with a shared history up to that point.
Bitcoin Cash operates like Bitcoin, with proof-of-work mining and a 21 million coin cap, but with substantially larger block sizes, allowing more transactions per block and keeping fees consistently below a cent. Anyone who held Bitcoin at the moment of the 2017 split received an equal amount of BCH, and the two chains have evolved independently since.
Bitcoin Cash is positioned as everyday electronic cash, prioritizing cheap, fast payments over the store-of-value role Bitcoin has taken. It is accepted by a modest network of merchants and payment processors, and its community continues to develop features like the CashTokens standard, which brought token issuance to the chain.
