About AXS
Axie Infinity is a blockchain-based game where players collect, breed, and battle creatures called Axies, with in-game assets represented as tradable tokens. Its governance token is AXS.
Axie Infinity was created by Sky Mavis, a Vietnamese game studio founded by Trung Nguyen and Aleksander Larsen, launching in 2018. It became the breakout hit of the play-to-earn gaming trend during 2021, particularly popular in the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries where players earned meaningful income playing the game.
Players collect and battle creatures called Axies, each an NFT with unique traits, breeding new Axies and earning Smooth Love Potion tokens through gameplay that could be sold for real money. The game runs partly on Ronin, a dedicated Ethereum sidechain Sky Mavis built to handle the game's transaction volume affordably.
AXS is the governance token of the Axie ecosystem, used for staking, breeding fees, and voting on the game's development. The play-to-earn model faced a major test when Ronin was hacked for over 600 million dollars in 2022, and the ecosystem has since worked to rebuild trust and shift toward more sustainable game design.
