ApeCoin launched in March 2022, created by the ApeCoin DAO in coordination with Yuga Labs, the company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection, one of the most valuable NFT projects at the time. It was distributed via airdrop to Bored Ape and Mutant Ape NFT holders.
ApeCoin functions as the governance and utility token across the wider Bored Ape ecosystem, including Yuga Labs' other projects like Otherside, a metaverse platform, though Yuga Labs itself operates independently of the ApeCoin DAO's governance.
APE is used for governance voting within the ApeCoin DAO, purchases and transactions within Otherside and other ecosystem products, and as an entry point for events and experiences tied to the Bored Ape brand. Its value has closely tracked the broader boom and subsequent cooldown of the NFT market.
